The Alumni/ae Fund is critical in helping Bard to maintain its tradition of innovation
and standard of academic excellence. Each year, the Alumni/ae Fund helps to provide
more than $19,000,000 in student scholarships, pay faculty salaries,
fund the purchase of new books for the library, and support the day-to-day
operations of the College.
The Alumni/ae Fund comprises unrestricted gifts that are made to Bard College
during the fiscal year, between July 1 and June 30. Gifts to the Annual
Fund and the Parents' Fund are included in the Alumni/ae Fund.

AWARE
Genya Shimkin ’08
"When I found out that Bard College
offered a major in Human Rights, I knew it was the school for me. One of my main interests was health and the
intersection of health issues and human rights. With help from the TLS
Office, Worldwide AIDS/HIV, and Reproductive Education, AWARE was born during my
first semester. The main goal of the organization is to combat the spread
of HIV/AIDS in high-risk areas by engaging young people in dialogues about
health and harm reduction.
My branch of AWARE is focused in St. Petersburg, Russia. As a Russian Studies
and Human Rights major, I have long been fascinated by Russia. In October 2005, with
tremendous support from the TLS Program and the Institute for International
Liberal Education, I was able to attend the International Conference on
HIV/AIDS and Human Rights in Russia
in St. Petersburg.
Activism is in my blood. This school and
this program have given me the chance to fuse that passion with an academic
discipline that gives me direction, grounding, and a new appreciation for the
importance of human rights."
